Newsletter May 28, 2010BRIGHT BEGINNINGS PRESCHOOL Crozet Newsletter Upcoming Events: Monday, May 31st, closed completely for Memorial Day It’s that TIME again! Water Park Update:
We are waiting on the fencing people to come and set up our fence again. Once that is complete we will open our playground and sprinkler park!! We will have a grand-ribbon-cutting-opening! As soon as we know when the fence will be up, we will let all of you know when that special day will be! Some parents had voiced a concern about the concrete. We just wanted you to know that we have been working very closely with our licensing inspector and the concrete has been approved. A rubber or plastic surfacing is not a good surface, because it causes children to slip and fall. We used a rough texture on the surface to keep the children from slipping (but not too course that it would hurt their little feet). Once the concrete has settled and cured, we will be painting the concrete with concrete paint. This will not make the concrete slippery, but will add a little more color to the sprinkler area. Concrete paint is used at most water parks around the country! ACAC outdoor pool has the same type of surface for their baby pool area. Water Park Rules: Bike Day will be on TUESDAYS!
We will still have bike day and it will still take place in the parking lot. For those new parents who have never had a bike day, we block off the parking lot from cars and have the children bring their bikes to school on that day. Parents can bring the bike/tricycles and park them on the sides of our front porch. Weekly Financial Memo:
June tuition is due. Pay by May 30th to avoid late charges. All students must have a signed contract on file and a set schedule of attendance. This is necessary to provide a consistent, high quality, nurturing environment for each child. Tuition is due each week for the length of the contract since tuition is calculated on a yearly basis. No discounts or tuition adjustments will be given for illness, family vacations, holidays, snow days, teacher workdays, etc. Class Notes: The Pelican Class: The Pelican week started off with reading about dogs. We read Clifford The Big Red Dog. The story talked about him from a puppy to a big dog. Keaton is pulling up on the table and shelves pulling everything down. Ashlyn really likes to throw everything on the floor and then helps to clean it up. We made a dog by rolling a golf ball around in a box with brown paint and white paper. This was so much fun. Everyone enjoyed stacking and knocking blocks down. We had fun laying on the blocks too. Have a great weekend!
This week for gross motor, we played with a jump rope while using our vocabulary words: over, under and around. In music and movement, we played a listening game. When the music stopped you stood still and when it started you danced around. In art, we made dogs. We put a cut out of a dog in the box. Next, we put balls and paint in the box. Finally, we rolled the balls to paint the dogs. We enjoyed finger painting, shape sponge prints, and coloring a mailbox. For fine motor and sensory, we played in the sand. We enjoyed filling and spilling. We used our scent bottles and sponges in the water table. We had fun with guess what is inside the can. In practical living and self-help, we pretended to be postal workers and deliver the mail. We lined up chairs and pretended to go deliver the mail in our cars. We had a great week. Have a safe and fun Memorial weekend. Ms. Jen The Peacock Class: Hello Peacock families and friends! This week we have enjoyed learning/practicing our shapes and numbers. Every morning during group time, we practiced shapes with our flash cards. We counted to one to ten in English and Spanish also using our fingers. This week we have been talking about our families: mommies, daddies, siblings and even our pets. We are working very hard at school to learn that our hands are nice hands and that they are not used for hitting or hurting our friends. Monday was Ms. Lee’s birthday so we had yummy strawberry short cakes to celebrate. Please remember to vote for Bright Beginnings Preschool in Daily Progress! If you ever have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to stop by! P.S. Book orders are due now! Thanks, Ms. Lee The Bunny Class: Hello Bunny families and friends! The Bunnies have been hard at work this week. In math, we have been working hard on our class counting book. Along with that, we’ve been practicing counting in English and Spanish. For science this week, we discovered zoo animals. We learned about what kinds of animals live at the zoo. We even took a “trip” to the zoo which Carter and Makayla loved. We also enjoyed reading a story called My School is a Zoo. Conner and Jake enjoyed telling the rest of the class their favorite zoo animals. During language arts this week, we concentrated on rhyming stories and zoo stories. Elara and Nathan did a great job the week picking out and saying rhyming words. We did lots of cool art projects this week. Emily and Elisabeth had fun making coffee filter butter flies. Addie and Martin enjoyed making our Mexican hats. For children humanities, we continued to learn the importance of recycling. We learned about what can be recycled and where recycling goes. We finished the week off with the Lorax by Dr. Seuss, a great story about the importance of conserving. I hope everyone enjoys their holiday weekend. See you on Tuesday! The Walrus Class: The Walrus class has been busy learning about time and making our own time clocks. We enjoyed working with Ms. Ryan and learning to use our bodies to make shapes of different hours. Time does flies when you are having fun. We have continued to learn to count to ten in Spanish. The children can do this pretty much on their own. The letter of the week is “U”. We came up with many words that have the letter “U”, including Walrus. Way to go Lucy for thinking of the word “you”, which has a “U” at the end! We also enjoyed looking at a real butterfly that Lucas brought to share. The Walrus class is looking forward to the new Water Park to open! Ms. Ann The Rooster Class: In language arts, we introduced a new letter of the week “U”. We brainstormed words that contain the letter “U”. We practiced writing “U” in our journals. The Roosters did a fantastic job Ms. Amanda and Ms. Sherri

Speech Weekly Notes from Stacy Torrence:
Emergent LiteracyChildren start to learn language from the day they are born. As they grow and develop, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. They learn to understand and use language to express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings, and to communicate with others. During early speech and language development, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage, known as emergent literacy, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. Children see and interact with print (e.g., books, magazines, grocery lists) in everyday situations (e.g., home, in preschool, and at daycare) well before they start elementary school. Parents can see their child's growing appreciation and enjoyment of print as he or she begins to recognize words that rhyme, scribble with crayons, point out logos and street signs, and name some letters of the alphabet. Gradually, children combine what they know about speaking and listening with what they know about print and become ready to learn to read and write. Are Spoken Language and Literacy Connected? Yes. The experiences with talking and listening gained during the preschool period prepare children to learn to read and write during the early elementary school years. This means that children who enter school with weaker verbal abilities are much more likely to experience difficulties learning literacy skills than those who do not. One spoken language skill that is strongly connected to early reading and writing is phonological awareness-the recognition that words are made up of separate speech sounds, for example, that the word dog is composed of three sounds: d, aw, g. There are a variety of oral language activities that show children's natural development of phonological awareness, including rhyming (e.g., "cat-hat") and alliteration (e.g., "big bears bounce on beds"), and isolating sounds ("Mom, f is the first sound in the word fish"). As children playfully engage in sound play, they eventually learn to segment words into their separate sounds, and "map" sounds onto printed letters, which allows them to begin to learn to read and write. Children who perform well on sound awareness tasks become successful readers and writers, while children who struggle with such tasks often do not. What Parents Can Do: You can help your child develop literacy skills during regular activities without adding extra time to your day. There also are things you can do during planned play and reading times. Show your children that reading and writing are a part of everyday life and can be fun and enjoyable. Activities for preschool children include the following: Talk to your child and name objects, people, and events in the everyday environment. Repeat your child's strings of sounds (e.g., "dadadada, bababa") and add to them. Talk to your child during daily routine activities such as bath or mealtime and respond to his or her questions. Draw your child's attention to print in everyday settings such as traffic signs, store logos, and food containers. Introduce new vocabulary words during holidays and special activities such as outings to the zoo, the park, and so on. Engage your child in singing, rhyming games, and nursery rhymes. Reread your child's favorite book(s). Focus your child's attention on books by pointing to words and pictures as you read. Encourage your child to describe or tell a story about his/her drawing and write down the words. This information is from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (2006) Class Notes:
The Pelican Class Pelicans started off the week by singing Good Morning and trying to repeat everyone’s names. Squeaking toys in water made Ashlyn splash it all over the place, but she had so much fun. Shaking a ball in a box with black paint to make cows- everyone was laughing! Keaton loves to watch everyone dance and roll to the music so we let him roll too. Reading about Spot going to the farm and seeing all the animals and seeing if they could find Spot! Practicing for the picnic is so much fun, so we hope to see you there on Sunday, May 16 at 4:00pm until 6:00pm! Come join the fun and watch the children perform. Ms. Sue The Kangaroo Class This week the toddlers have been busy practicing for the family picnic. We have been talking about the different kinds of animals, what they eat, and what sounds the animals make. It has been really fun! In gross motor and movement, we have been playing games such as Duck Duck Goose, Pee-a-Boo-Tent—where we make a tent out of a blanket and use the vocabulary words to go in and out, and under. We also have been climbing while using our words to go up, over, down, and under. We have had so much fun! In fine motor/art/sensory, we have been busy in our sensory table with sugar, flour, seeds, sand, and water. We have made sunflowers with noodles on paper plates, then painted them. We used a big box and a ball to paint spots on our cows, we made caterpillars by cutting out five big circles of different colors and glued down paper and the children drew a face on the caterpillars. In music, we sang Old McDonald while pretending to be a farm animal around the room. In practical living, we pretended to visit a farm and talk to the animals with the sands. We learned that they make-? We made a garden out of blocks and brought fruit and veggies from the kitchen. We talked about, “How does our garden grow?” We used little shovels to move the fruit and veggies around to the grocery store which is in the kitchen area. Have a super weekend! Then, we got to practice estimating ourselves! Connor and Martin like estimating how many beans were on the plate, and Jake liked estimating how many blocks were in the cup! During science time we talked about pets. We learned what kind of animals can be pets and what kind of animals cannot be pets. Emily and Makayla enjoyed telling the class about their pets! For language arts this week, we read stories about pets. We also continued to work with rhyming stories. We also practiced recognizing the letters in our names. Addie and Nathan have such a great job recognizing and naming their letters. Elara has improved in the past couple weeks on making the right sounds for her letters! Ms. Stephanie has been a great addition to our staff and has transitioned quickly into the Rooster room! As you know, Ms. Amanda started working part time this passed Monday and her schedule will be 8:30-12, Monday through Thursday, which will allow her to continue teaching during our preschool hours. Ms. Stephanie has been Co-Teaching along with Ms. Sherri. Ms. Stephanie started working here on April 12th from 4-6 in the afternoons, I hope you all have gotten a chance to meet her! Stephanie graduated from Towson University with her Associates Degree in General Studies, Psychology. Stephanie comes to us with several years of preschool experience in Maryland. She worked mainly with ages two through four. After moving to Charlottesville, Stephanie worked in the Albemarle County Public School system as a teaching assistant. Stephanie is also CPR and First Aid trained. Since Stephanie will be supplementing Ms. Amanda’s role and time in the classroom her schedule will be, Monday through Thursday 12:00-6:00, and Friday, 8:30-6:00. Ms. Melissa Parsells, the new Walrus teacher has done a fantastic job this week, working with the children. As we expected this transition has gone very smoothly. Melissa graduated from Mary Baldwin College in 2009 with her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Social Work and a minor in Education. She is currently working on her Masters of Education at Averett University which she will complete in 2011. Melissa interned in the public school system in Staunton, and at Child Protective Services in Verona. Melissa has also worked as a substitute teacher in grades pre-k through fifth at Thomas Dixon, A.R. Ware, and Bessie Weller Elementary Schools. Most recently, Melissa worked as a PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) aide at Riverheads Elementary Schools where she worked with Pre-K and kindergarten students. If you haven’t already, please welcome her by introducing yourself and feel free to set up a personal or phone conference with her. As always, please feel free to ask any questions. Thank you for your help with this transition! As for our administrative team, we are looking forward to having PJ Gilbert, our Forest Lakes Program Director, continue her position as Assistant Executive Director for our company. As you know, Ms. Casey will be transitioning out of her role as director this summer. We are pleased to announce that PJ will be specifically responsible for both the Forest Lakes and the Crozet locations. She will be the Program Director at both locations spending approximately 50% of her time at each site. In order to continue to provide desk coverage to ensure a manager is consistently available for questions and to assist teachers and children when necessary, PJ will be supported at each location by a full time Office Manager. The Office Manager for Crozet will be Brittany Veith who graduated from JMU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education. Brittany has taught at Bright Beginnings since she was 14 and attended Bright Beginnings as a child! Starting next week, Ms. Casey will be working with Bright Beginnings on a part-time/substitute basis throughout the summer at all three locations. Water park update: This week we have installed the piping and the sod to our playground area. The mulch has been spread and the toys will be set up to go! The fences should be put back up soon. The sprinklers will be installed and tested, and we will be planting some trees to grow and be our shade on our playground. |
