Speech Weekly Notes from Stacy Torrence:

The week of January 4th

Happy New Year! I’m excited to get back into the classroom and perform speech and language groups. These are some of the skills we will be working on this week.

Toddlers and young 2’s

We began by reading another “Noisy Story” to practice our speech sounds. We headed back to the zoo and worked on the following sounds /m/, /t/, /sh/, /s/, and /e/, /r/. We played with our pretend miniature kitchen and worked on the prepositions “in” and “out”. We fed a baby with the meals we prepared and focused on the signs “eat”, “drink”, “milk”, “finished”, and “more please”. We also used 3-4 word sentences and described what the baby was eating. Buddy Bear and Becca Bunny books were used to focus on sorting and prepositions.

Older 2’s

We also read also read the noisy story about the zoo and focused on several speech sounds. We also worked with our pretend kitchen and prepared meals for our hungry baby. We used 4-5 word sentences and described the foods the baby was drinking. To work on prepositions we used several manipulates such as a dog, table, house, bed, car, etc. We worked on the prepositions, “in, “on”, “under” and “in front”, “above”, and “below”. The children were asked to follow specific directions with several prepositions.

3’s and 4’s

We utilized our alphabet books and focused on phonemic awareness skills. We played sound bingo and thought of words that began with specific sounds. We stepped it up and focused on several prepositions this week. We worked on “in, “on”, “under”, “in front”, “behind”, “between”, and “beneath” while following multi-step directions.

Parent Tip: A dollhouse or any kind of house is a great way to work on prepositions and following multi step directions with your child. For example, “put the cookies in the oven”, “Put the dog under the table beside the bone”, or “put the baby in the crib”, etc.

Child Development Notes from Ms. Brittany Veith:

http://www.naeyc.org/files/tyc/file/Children's%20books%20on%20friendship.pdf

Here is a great resource for parents and teachers about books that are out there, on friendship! When ever a child is having a hard time making friends or sharing there is always a great book to help the figure out how to solve the problem.

Class Notes:

The Pelican Class

Pelicans love being at school with their friends! They also love to play with blocks, stacking them up and knocking them down! Berkeley and Maegan like wearing rings on their arms for bracelets. This week, dumping and filling containers with rattles and cars have been Jackson and Gray’s favorite things they played with! Everybody enjoyed putting their hands in paint to make different kinds of art. Keaton is the smallest of the group so he enjoyed watching the big one’s move around; also, he is trying to roll from his stomach to his back! We all enjoyed reading books with animals and making animal sounds!

Ms. Sue

The Kangaroo Class

This week the Kangaroos have been talking about snow! We have used paint to make snowmen and snowflakes, balls to pretend to have a snowball fight, and dress ups to dress for cold weather! WE have also worked on language by making phrases shorter, “Beat Jen” for Drum play. This will help our students to talk and communicate easier. We have also been using different objects to distinguish in and out. We have had a fantastic week back! Hope everyone enjoyed their break!

Ms. Jen

The Peacock Class

Hello peacock families and friends! We have had a great week back at school. I hoe everyone had a wonderful holiday! This week in class we have been focusing on prepositional phrases, and everyone in class did really well with this concept. We have also been discussing and learning about the weather outside. We have talked about the differences of when it is cold out and when it is hot out. In relation to this, our art projects have been creating snowmen, hats, mittens, and snowflakes to reflect the winter weather! Everyone in class has enjoyed reading our different snowmen stories, these stories teach us about teamwork, sharing, taking turns, and the importance of friendships. It has been a great week in the peacock class for learning! If you have any questions please feel free to stop by!

Happy New Year!
Ms. Lee

The Bunny Class

Welcome back Funny families and friends! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! In math this week we discovered the difference between large and small objects. We would find items in the classroom and compare them to each other. Riley and Nathan enjoyed it when we compared our heights. For science, we discussed winter weather. We discovered, snow, frost, and ice. We also talked about the difference between hot and cold. Jake and Emily enjoyed coming up with examples of hot and cold objects. We kept the winter theme in language arts by reading stories about snowmen, snow storms, and a very special book called Winter Words. We also continued using the Discovery Quest book series. During social awareness we discovered ways to effectively solve our problems. We discussed that “using our words” is the best way to solve problems. We will continue to work very hard on this! Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. Whitney

The Walrus Class

Welcome back and happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday! The Walrus kids are back and ready to learn! In math we’re focusing on size. We discussed what size is and determined the size of a few objects around our room. We also tied in the concept of measurement and what can be determined by measuring. In science we’re talking about winter and the cold weather it brings. We read a winter story and shared with the class what we do when we’re cold; take a look below for our answers! We also discussed the seasonal transition from fall to winter and have been doing daily weather reports. In language arts we had a community meeting where we sang, “Star Light, Star Bright,” with our Rooster friends! We’re also working on the letter “H” as well as continually reviewing ALL letters of the alphabet! In art, we played with shaving cream! We dyed the fluffy white cream blue by adding blue paint and then used paint brushes to create a snowy scene! The shaving cream also made a neat texture different from that of regular paint. We loved painting with the shaving cream and enjoyed the scent too! In social awareness, we reviewed our class rules. We discussed safety and respect and how important each of these is. We talked about ways we can earn stickers on our day notes as well as classroom jobs! We all love to be classroom helpers and Ms. Erin appreciates our hard work when we are selected to help out! We had a kindermusik visit with Ms. Melissa where we sang, “If You’re Happy and You Know It” (which Lucy really got into!) as well as a song about a zoo! We got to make lots of noise with her egg shakers as we were trying out different beats and methods of shaking! We’re all glad to be back at school and had so many wonderful stories to share with our friends! We’re looking forward to 2010 and all of the cool things we get to do and learn here at school! Have a great weekend!

The Rooster Class

Welcome back! We hope that everyone had a restful, happy holiday. The Rooster class jumped right back into work! We began working with the letter “Hh,” our letter of the week. We brainstormed words beginning with “Hh,” practiced writing the letter and even learned a song about “Hh.” We also continued our work with sight words, reviewing all the words we learned: a, am, be, I, my, no, of, so, the, to, yes.

In science, we discussed how animals behave in the winter, specifically hibernation. In math, we worked on counting by 2’s and 5’s! We also did a fun cooking project where we practiced measuring ingredients and worked with volume!

In art, we were busy making bells to “ring” in the New Year! We also used tissue paper and wax paper to create mitten sun-catchers – check them out in our windows! Finally, we traced our shoes on black paper and used these to make our very own penguins!

In social awareness, we worked all week on problem solving. We discussed and acted out how we should handle several different situations: what to do if someone makes a face at you, if someone calls you a name, if someone hits you, or if someone cuts in line. We are working on being good classmates and good friends!
