Speech Weekly with Ms. Stacy Toddlers and young 2's We began by reading a repetitive story while acting out the movements in the story. We also fed our baby cookies that were in the shape of a circle, rectangle, heart, semicircle, triangle, and square. Next we focused on a sharing activity in which the children sat in a circle and requested a toy by using at least 3-4 words. We read "Buddy Bear Goes on Vacation" and described all the places Buddy Bear went such as the desert, ocean, jungle, forest, etc. We worked on sign language throughout the entire session. Older 2's We began by reading "Polar Bear Polar Bear" and described several animals as well as actions. We then read "Buddy Bear Goes on Vacation" and described places such as the forest, jungle, beach, desert, ocean, etc. We also fed our talking baby shape cookies. The children did a great job with the different shapes. We also worked on a sharing activity in which the children requested a toy from their friends using at least 5-6 words. 3's and 4's This week we focused primarily on phonemic awareness. The children received a plate filled with shaving cream to practice their letters. I made a sound and the children had to "write" the corresponding letter in the shaving cream. Then we discussed words that began with specific sounds as well as came up with rhyming words. Next we began blending sounds to make words. We used the tabletop to make simple words and integrated several letters to make new words. The children are going to have a great start to Kindergarten. In the upcoming language groups I would like to continue the "Road to the Code" phonemic awareness program to continue sound blending. Have a great weekend.

Monkey The family picnic on Sunday was a blast! Thanks to all those who attended! In the Monkey room this week we will be using the sensory table daily and practicing the terms "inside" and "outside." We will be practicing sharing with our friends by rolling balls to each other in a big circle! We will also be doing some tumbling this week! We are always practicing colors and learning how to match things! We have a cooking project planned for Friday! We are hoping to get some time outside! For art we will be making corn, finger puppets, a portrait of the child's pet, cat art and lady bugs!
Giraffe The Giraffes did a great job at Family Picnic. Thank you for your support this year! I hope to see everyone at the Family Picnic again next year! This week the children will be learning about farmers, what they do, the tools they use and what plants and animals they care for. Our Art activities this week will be related to our farm animal theme. This week the Giraffes welcome two new friends Hannah and Delcan! We want to wish Caden a very happy birthday! We are also very sad to say goodbye to our friend Caleb! We will miss you and hope you come back to visit us; best wishes in Germany! Lion This week the Lions are roaring about farm animals. We have been singing "Old MacDonald", "BINGO", and "Oats, Peas, Beans, and Barley Grow". Our art this week included dress the farmer, baby duck finger prints, and farm cats. We discussed who lives in a barn, what most farm animals eat, equipment on a farm and what the farmer's job is. Our letter of the week is "O". We will be adding words to our wordlist and practicing writing in our journals. For Children's Humanities we continue to explore various ways of crating art; sidewalk chalk, water painting outside, play dough sculpting, and charcoal paintings. We had a fun week! We welcome Cedric to our class and wish Halei a Happy Birthday! Elephant We had a very successful Family Picnic over the weekend, and had so much fun performing for our families. We are continuing our theme of farming and learning about pets as well. We have talked about the jobs a farmer does on his farm and the jobs we do at home for our pets. Our letter of the week is O and we are getting very good at tracing it! We are also still practicing counting but in addition we are graphing, estimating and adding and subtracting objects. We are beginning to count very high no w! w!
Tigers The family picnic was a big success. The Tigers enjoyed singing for their families, and eating all the good food! Thanks go to everyone! This week we are going to focus on our family pets. What pet do we have, their name, and how old they are! It is always fun to bring in a picture of our pet to share with the class. The Tigers have been working very hard on number and letter recognition. A big hit in the class is 1-2-3 Bingo and A-B-C Bingo, fun games for learning! For Project Green we are discussing keeping America beautiful, what part do we play and how it can be done. We continue our music each day - singing, dancing, and playing musical chairs. As you can see the Tigers are having a good time. Zebra We became farmers this week! On Monday, we read I'm Going to be a Farmer. This book had great photographs of a little boy helping his family on their farm. We learned about the many jobs a farmer has and we talked about which ones we'd like to be in charge of. Many of our activities this week were theme related. We played a fun circle time game where we guessed which farm food and farm animal was in our mystery box. This encouraged great listening and thinking skills. For art, we drew pictures of Old MacDonald (not to be confused with Ronald McDonald like some of our friends were!), painted barns, and drew pictures of our favorite f arm pet. We spent time writing about farm jobs and farm animals. Our corn is beginning to really take off and our herbs are starting to sprout. On Tuesday, some of us wanted to plant pear, apple, and orange seeds that we discovered during lunch. We planted these seeds and will look forward to watching out for sprouts! Dramatic play was encouraged with a plastic barn, animals, and tractor. The kids added Lincoln log fences and carpet squares for grass!
Chameleon This week in the Chameleon class we have been talking about pets. We read the book Pet Show by Ezra Jack Keats. We talked about animals that can be pets and animals that cannot. We also played a pets beginning sound game, a cat whiskers counting game, and worked on ordinal numbers with a dog show game. On Friday we even bought in our stuffed animals to have our own pet show. We also analyzed pet food to see if we could guess what type of animal ate each kind of food. We worked on graphing skills by graphing the types of pets we have at home, and worked on estimation with dog bones. We went digging for bones in the sensory table and experimented the texture of bird seed. For art we painted with water colors, made cats, dogs and cat puppets and painted pictures of our own pets.

Speech with Ms. Stacy These are the skills that were addressed this week. I’m seeing improvements with speech and language skills in all of the classrooms. Toddlers and young 2’s We began by reading several noisy stories working on a variety of speech sounds. We also used a ball toy to request a hammer and a ball while using as many words as possible. We worked on sign language throughout the entire session. Older 2’s We began by reading a noisy story and used our ball toy as well. The children did a great job of requesting the color of their choice by stating “May I have the yellow ball please”. We then focused on things that go together. The children had to look at four pictures and name the pictures that go together. For example a bird and a nest, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and crayons and paper, etc. We also worked on opposites such as up/down, big/little, on/off, top/bottom etc. 3’s and 4’s We used our light up toy and sat in a circle and answered several “wh” questions. We then focused on opposites as a group. We worked on almost 50 opposites together; A few examples were few/many, thin/thin, simple/fancy, top/bottom, long/short, clean/dirty etc. We also addressed things that go together. Each child had to pick two items that went together and explain why the two items went together. Explaining why was a little challenging at times, but those are higher order language skills that are great to work on and challenge the kids. Have a great weekend. Stacy Torrence M.S. CCC-SLP Reading with Ms. Fischer On Tuesday, May 4th, a lesson on friendship was presented through a read a-loud of the book, A Rainbow of Friends, by P. K. Hallinan and a “Find a Friend” matching game. The book prompted a time of talking and listening to discuss what it means to be a good friend. Such interactive and fun language activities will encourage early literacy skills for reading and writing success during the elementary school years.

Speech with Ms. Stacy A language-rich environment? A language-rich environment is pretty much what the name suggests: a setting in which the child is surrounded by talk and has plenty of opportunities to communicate with others. Research on child language development has confirmed the importance of talking frequently to children below age 3 and using a wide variety of vocabulary. Toddlers whose parents do this develop better expressive and receptive language skills than children whose parents talk less with them and use a limited vocabulary. The value of this is not limited to children with speech and language disorders. All children can benefit from a healthy and varied diet of language activities. The following are tips and ideas for talking to your child in ways that help develop better language skills: Turn off the TV Talk, talk, talk (slowly and simply) Sing and rhyme Get out the toys and play, but ditch the batteries Learn (and use) some baby signs Don't try to implement everything at once. Instead, pick one of these things you think you can do, and try it for a week. Once it becomes a habit, add something else. You may already be doing some or all of these things. If so, see if you can do those more often and be more conscious of them while you're doing them. After all, very few parents are actually doing anything wrong, but most parents can do more right.
Music with Ms. Melissa The children love to sing and dance. Here are some songs to practice at home with your child! This great way to bridge home and school. Arabella Miller (tune of Twinkle Twinkle) (Using fingers on arms are a caterpillar) Little Arabella Miller found a fuzzy caterpillar First it crawled upon her brother Then upon her dear grandmother Little Arabella Miller please take away that….CATAPILLAR! (as it tickles from neck to toe) Littlest Worm (focus listening and auditory skills) Adult: “The littlest worm” Child repeats “The Littlest worm” Adult: “I ever saw” Child repeats: “I ever saw” Adult: “Was stuck inside” Child repeats “Was stuck inside” Adult: “My soda straw” Child repeats “My soda straw” Everyone – The littlest worm I ever saw-aw-aw-aw-aw Was stuck inside my soda straw-aw-aw-aw-aw-aw! Weekly Financial Reminders May tuition is due. Pay by April 30 to avoid late charges. If you forget your pass card to enter the building, please remember to sign your child in or out at the front desk. Monkey This week in the Monkey Room we will be doing a lot of exercise! We are going to be doing a flamingo balance contest to see who can balance the longest! We are also going to be doing some relaxing yoga poses! We are going to be working in our new sensory table this week. For art we are gluing leaves to a tree cut-out, making “I’s” for the letter of the week, making recycle art, and butterflies! There will also be time for building with blocks, puzzles and legos. Giraffe This week the Giraffes will go over what we learned during Earth Day. We will go on a trash walk, study soil and practice recycling. Our art activities will be related to the above activities. We will also go over things that start with the letter I, and we will continue to go over our rhymes for the Family Picnic. Lion This week the Lion class is very excited to continue to talk about spring and characteristics of trees. The Lions will also continue to talk about helping our Earth by keeping it clean. We will even be going on a trash walk. Our letter of the week is Ii. With May fastly approaching we will soon be ready to transplant our tomato sprouts in our our slice of pizza. If anyone has any donations of top soil for our pizza that would be great! Elephant This week we have continued to learn about the earth and what we can see around us, including trees and forests-who lives there, what do they look like, and where can you find them? We have talked about all the different areas of our community where you can find trees and forests. We are adding a new letter to our word list-letter I. In addition, we’re practicing writing our letters and our names, recognizing the letters we’ve learned, and journaling all the words we think of. We are continuing our recycling contest and thinking of new ways we can help our environment! Tigers The Tigers were very busy this week!! For Art, the Tigers made paintings with squash, made a globe, a cocoon, tree roots, and did a project with the butterfly life cycle. For Math and Science, the Tigers discussed plants, clean water versus dirty water, and worked on number recognition. For Language Arts, the Tigers played A-B-C Bingo, practiced writing the letter E in their journals, and enjoyed lots of fun books at circle time. For Children’s Humanities, the Tigers enjoyed “Duck, Duck Goose”, “Red Light Green Light”, musical chairs, the shoe hunt game, and hot potato. Dramatic play was also fun this week in Kitchen! Hope everyone has a great weekend! Zebra This week, we learned all about endangered animals and what we can do to help. During Monday’s circle time, we had a very interesting conversation about the word “endangered.” There were ideas of animals being “in danger” of other animals and even ideas about cats stuck in trees. To get a better understanding of this word “endangered”, we researched internet sites and discovered there are many animals “in danger” of becoming extinct due to hunting, ice melting, oil spills, and shrinking habitats. Everyone was super-interested in wanting to help (“I don’t want the polar bears to go away!”). We spent the week discussing ways people can help animals – we even voted to “adopt” a sea otter and raised money to try and make that happen! Some of our non-endangered animal lessons included a lot of Language Arts activities. We played a “rhyme basket” game and a syllable game. We took time writing and recognizing letters some of us get tricked by (especially lower case d, b, q, and p). We played around with volume at the sand and water table and walked around the school picking up trash for Project Green. We played 11-20 number bingo and are working hard to make sure we are counting correctly (13, 14, 15,16,17,18 is tricky to say!). Some of our favorite activities for the week were working together to write a story called, “How We Saved Endangered Animals” and drawing pictures of our favorite otter; dramatic play was also a big hit for all! Chameleon This week in the Chameleon class we have been talking about trees in honor or Arbor Day on Friday, April 30. We read the story The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstien, we talked about all the benefits trees have to the environment, and trees were also the subject of our art work this week. We also talked about the parts of a tree and did rubbings of the bark. We also wrote and illustrated a class book about trees. Our letter of the week is Ii; we came up with words starting with I for our word wall and practiced writing them in our journal. For Project Green, we read The Zorax and did an experiment to learn about carpooling and smog. For Dramatic Play we ran our own book store and library. Thanks to all the Chameleon parents who helped out with the recycling contest. The Chameleons were the winners with 158 recycled items!!

We have also enjoyed observing our vegetable sprouts and can’t wait until we can plant them outdoors in our pizza garden. We have been working on writing the letter E in our journals, practicing letter recognition, and shape recognition. For Math this week we have been using flowers with numbers to count the butterflies and bumblebees. Elephant This week is all about butterflies, bees, and other insects that fly. We talked about how they can fly and how they are different from crawling bugs. We are still working on writing our names and cutting with scissors, writing our letters, and some math skills. The letter of the week is E and we have came up with lots of E words, and are recognizing more letters! Tigers This week the Tigers read books about butterflies and honey bees. We are starting to see a few of our creepy crawly friends now that spring is in the air. Math we used our number flash cards to review numbers 1-10. We played the quick number game, 1-2-3 Bingo. The seeds we planted a few days ago are now turning into green plants, can’t wait for the flower to bloom. We have been talking about recycling and how important it is to our environment. It has been fun looking out our window and sees the many changes all around us. Hope you enjoyed our butterfly and honey bee art. Ask your child who Cookie is in the Tiger class. Zebra Our theme for the week was centered around The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. On Monday we read the book and laughed at all the silly food he ate – do caterpillars really eat salami and chocolate cake?! On Tuesday, we discussed the life cycle of a butterfly and learned caterpillars eat leaves. Some of our other circle activities included extending the book’s story by talking about where the butterfly may have flown off to. We also categorized reality/fantasy which encouraged some critical thinking skills and answering open-ended questions. During Math, we graphed whether or not we’d let a caterpillar crawl on our hands. We calculated the data and used simple addition to tally up the votes. We sorted butterfly cards (starting with one and going all the way to twenty five!). We also made patterns and one-to-one correspondence with a file folder game. For Science, we discovered the difference between a cocoon and a chrysalis and tried to figure out how a sponge holds water at the sensory tub. Art was super fun! We made art inspired by Eric Carle’s illustrations. Projects included tissue paper butterflies, coffee filter butterflies in a chrysalis, painting the hungry caterpillar, and drawing the food we’d eat if we were hungry caterpillars. We’ve been working extra hard with our writing skills – some of us are beginning to write our full names and a lot of us are identifying sight words! Chameleon For the month of April, the Chameleons will be talking about bugs, and we will focus on Eric Carle books each week dealing with bugs. This week, we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar. With this story, we discussed the repetitive language found in the book. We talked about the life cycle of a butterfly, and we practiced our days of the week. We also worked on our math skills by graphing our favorite healthy foods and whether or not we would let a caterpillar crawl on our hand – most Chameleons said they would. We also retold the story using a felt board to practice our sequencing skills. For art, we made tissue butterflies, coffee filter butterflies, beehive collages, and ant art. Don’t forget to ask a Chameleon the difference between spiders, worms, and insects. I bet you’ll be surprised! We also worked on the letter of the week, which is Ee in our journals this week. We also practiced phonemic awareness by writing how we thought the word butterfly is spelled with inventive spelling. We also were the authors and illustrators of our own bug book this week. We were also busy in the kitchen this week. We made Very Hungry Caterpillar fruit pizza, yum! With Earth Day coming up this month, we also discussed recycling, caring for the environment, and protecting nature for Project Green. For Humanities, we played cooperative games outside and indoors and acted out The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We also celebrated Ryan Delp’s birthday and April as Poetry Month by reading poems from “Where the Sidewalk Ends”. We are also going to work on writing and remembering some poems of our own. |
