Speech Weekly with Ms. Stacey |

|
We had a great week with language groups. It was exciting to see the toddlers talking more and using sign language while speaking. My octopus bubble machine was a big hit in all of the classrooms. Toddlers and young 2’s We began by reading a “Noisy Story” to practice our speech sounds. We read the Noisy Story about a “Baby on the Farm”. We worked on the following sounds /m/, /g/, /b/, /r/, and /n/. Buddy Bear books were used to read books and answer simple “what” questions. We also introduced the story “Elmer” about a very special elephant. The book is filled with great language concepts such as (old, young, tall, short, thin, big, etc. The children had to listen to the story and place their story piece on the flannel board when appropriate. The octopus bubble machine was introduced and the children had to say, “pop bubbles” while the machine was on. Older 2’s We also read Elmer and focused on specific opposites and language concepts listed above. We played with our bubble machine and the children had a great time. Buddy Bear books were used to answer specific “what” questions. 3’s and 4’s We read Elmer and stepped it up a notch with the language concepts. We discussed the meaning of a herd, what it was like to be the same as well as different, answered many “wh” questions while reading the story and again focused on tall/short, thin/big, same/different, old/young, happy/sad, etc. We then continued to work on rhyming words with our rhyming houses and the children did a fantastic job putting their pictures in the appropriate rhyming house. Classroom News:
Monkey
This week the Monkeys will enjoy making silly clown faces and using M & M’s for art. They will also be practicing counting to 5, naming the primary colors, and pronouncing small word. We will be doing many actions such as “hop like a bunny” and “fly like a plane”. We are also going to be dressing up for many different themes such as the beach and animals. The Monkeys love to build so we will be building with Lego foam blocks and race tracks this week.
Giraffe
This week the children will be learning about Clowns (funny faces) and Circus tents and what we could find in them. We are continuing to practice our Nursery Rhymes for the Family Picnic, May 16th. The children are doing a great job learning the routine. Our letter of the week was Dd. We practiced the sounds that D makes and discussed words that began with D (dad, dog, and door). We also made triangle tents and festive shamrocks. During Project Green we discussed what endangered meant. Please keep in mind the following: children napping need top and bottom sheets. We should not be serving unsliced apples, carrots, hotdogs, popcorn, or anything that’s a choking hazard. Your child’s folder should be checked every day. If you are able, please send in a box of tissues for all our runny noses!
Lion
This week the Lions have been roaring about spring with the beautiful weather! We have had a chance to observe flower sprouts, March winds, and Ms. Mara flying a kite, and for Children’s Humanities, cloud watching. The Lions had lots of fun counting and sorting this week. Our favorite part of Math was M & M patterns! For Project Green, we talked about the meaning of endangered and read about Sea Turtles. We continued to talk about the circus, making clowns and circus tents for art! Did you love our painted faces? We were such cute clowns!!
Elephant
This week was circus theme and we learned all about what you see at the circus- lions, elephants, clowns, giraffes and of course the circus tent. We made clown faces, circus animal art and tents. We sorted animals by which you see at the circus, under the sea, in the forest and on a farm. Our letter of the week was Dd, and we added D words to our word wall and practiced writing the letter D. We had a new friend start this week in our class, Marley. We are very excited about the pretty weather.
Tigers
This week the Tigers took a trip to the circus. We read books about the elephants, tigers, horses and all the people at the circus. We had fun making a clown collage for the hall. In Math, we used circle and triangle shapes to make a clown. We have enjoyed playing 1-2-3 Bingo; this is great for number recognition. With the weather being so nice we took a short nature walk to see the birds and a few geese! Project Green: We talked about the sea turtle – and ways to keep him safe! We read the D book, made a list of D words, and we made our own book of D’s. Dramatic play we enjoyed being a family, and how a family helps each other.
Chameleon
It was Rainbow week in the Chameleon class. We read the story A Rainbow of My Own. We also experimented with prisms and talked about how water can act as a prism. We also learned the difference between primary and secondary colors and made a color wheel. We learned the order of the colors in the rainbow and made rainbow art. For Language Arts we practiced the letter D in our journal, inventive spelling for color words, and played a color word matching game. We improved our fine motor skills and explored color with sensory squish bags. We also had a Brownie Bake-Off on Tuesday!
Zebra
On Monday, I pulled out red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple paper and asked the class where they might find these colors. Almost immediately, I heard, “A rainbow!” or “Those are rainbow colors.” Our week was filled with lots of rainbows. During Monday’s art project, we made construction paper rainbows. Some of our other art projects were rainbow marble painting, a handprint rainbow, and a rainbow class book. We also tie-dyed t-shirts for a super special art project! For Math, we made pipe cleaner patterns, sorted buttons according to color, and number recognition. On Tuesday, we had a ton of fun predicting which rainbow color had the greatest amount in fun-sized candy packets. After our predictions, we opened the packs, sorted the colors, and graphed our findings on our own graphs. For Science, we spent time playing in our coffee bean sensory tub and even tried to make our own rainbow on Friday. We continued talking about the letter D, practiced our sight word knowledge with Ready Readers, and wrote about how rainbows are formed.

Special Events
Parents we don’t want your child to miss out on a thing! It is super important that you read your daily day note and the dry erase boards. The teachers work really hard to keep you posted on the daily curriculum and special events that are taking place in the classroom. We know that you are busy at pick up and drop off so maybe post your monthly curriculum calendar and the pink yearly calendar on your fridge at home to help you remember!
Security Cards/Buzzing
If you have lost your card or do not have one please let the front desk know so we can reissue you a new one. When you buzz you are defeating the purpose of our security system. Lots of parents over the last few weeks have not been using their cards and they are not signing their child in and out at the front desk. We have to have record of the time your child is dropped off and picked up and by whom. If you swipe your card it goes directly in to our system and it makes it much easier for the security of your child.
Virginia Festival of the Book March 14-March 20
We are very excited to be celebrating literature. We have lots of special events planned for the week. If you are able to come in to be a Mystery Reader or have someone come in please see your child’s class board to sign up. We will have an ice cream party, free Pizza Friday, special guests and dress up as your favorite fairy tale character, as well as art Eric Carle art display presented by our Pre K classes. We will also participate in the “Sesame Street” walk. They will turn the downtown mall into Sesame Street. The walk begins at the Omni and ends at the Paramount. We will make posters celebrating books, wear our BB t-shirts on Saturday March 20 Time TBA. Come join us and get some free literature!
Brownie Bake off Tuesday March 9 presented by the Parent Advisory. Signup sheets are located at the front desk. Hope to see you there!
Don’t miss out on the Children’s Night Outs. March 5: Over the Rainbow and March 19: Shining Shamrock. Signup sheets are at the front desk.
Speech Weekly
Toddlers and young 2’s
We began by building our vocabulary by reaching into my function bag and naming objects and talking about the use of the specific object. We discussed around 25 items as well as their functions including a spoon, chair, bed, cup, phone, comb, etc. We also read another noisy story and worked on the sounds /m/, /s/, /n/, /r/, /e/, and /w/. We also reviewed sign language as well.
Older 2’s
Each student reached into the function bag and had to name the object and tell their friends the function of each object. We also read a noisy story and focused on the sounds /m/, /s/, /n/, /r/, /e/, and /w/. Finally we worked on oral motor skills to exercise the muscles in our mouths by blowing cotton balls across the table with straws.
3’s and 4’s
We worked on rhyming sounds and used our rhyming houses. Each student had 2-3 cards in front of them and had to match their cards with the specific rhyming house. We also addressed the use of objects and were able to list 6 things you can do with a ball, discussed the use of keys, quarters, phones, bikes, and several others.
