Speech Weekly
This is a snapshot of what we worked on this week! I was very excited to see some young children using new signs, the teachers implementing the visual schedules, and the children working on difficult language concepts. Such “smart cookies” we have at Bright Beginnings!
Toddlers and young 2’s
We began by reading a “Noisy Story” to practice our speech sounds. Noisy Stories are simple stories that very young children can “read” because they are asked to make a specific sound in a repetitive manner. We read Noisy Stories about riding the bus and going to the zoo. Animals such as snakes were trying to “ride” the bus and the children pretended to be snakes and make /s/ sounds. We worked on /s/, /f/, /l/, /z/, and /r/. They did an amazing job. Next we worked on using “I want” strips as a visual tool to work on speaking in 3 word sentences. The children were able to choose specific colored balls but had to say and point to the strip using 3-4 words. For example, “I want red ball” and of course we had to add our sign for please as well. Speaking of sign language, we worked on the following signs “More”, “ball”, “please” and “want”. We also introduced Becca Bunny to work on specific language concepts. This week we focused on identifying shapes.
Older 2’s
We also read “Noisy Stories” and focused on sound bombardment of /f/, /s/, /z/ /l/, and /r/. We also categorized animals that live at the zoo. They were able to “read” the story with little help from me. We also used 4-5 word sentences and played with our ball toy. The children had to give sentences of at least 4 -5words to choose a specific colored ball and hammer. Next we also read language concepts books and the children help read the story by placing a shape sticker on Becca Bunny. They also used “big kid” sentences and described the story to their friends.
3’s and 4’s
We focused on comparatives/superlatives this week. For example, we introduced Buddy Bear and focused on using correct grammar by using comparatives and superlatives in sentences. For example, the first cave is dark, the second cave was darker, and the last cave was the darkest. This is a very hard language concept and I was really impressed with how the children did when introduced to comparatives/superlatives. We completed the language groups by making dogs that were folded to be long, longer, and longest. We worked on the following comparatives/superlatives:
short, shorter, shortest
large, larger, largest
scary, scarier, scariest
happy, happier, happiest
high, higher, highest
low, lower, lowest
good, better, best
Classroom NEWS:
Monkey Room:
This week the Monkeys worked on the letter K. we painted K’s and kites. We are working on colors and we talked about the colors while we painted with watercolors and also while we built with blocks. We had fun this week talking about the sounds animals make and trying to make their sounds. We have also been playing with balls, working on bouncing, kicking, and rolling to our friends. We made banana cream pudding for our cooking project. We all took turns stirring it up then we ate it the nilla wafers, yummy!
Giraffe Room
Please remember Harvest Feast supplies. This week we are exploring textures. We will play and make play dough. Our art activities will include sand bottles, water color, crayons and markers. We will practice climbing, jumping on one foot and following directions. We will also continue to practice our colors, numbers shapes and body parts. Don’t forget we are closed November 26th and 27th. Happy Thanksgiving.
Lions:
This week the Lions are roaring about their five senses and Thanksgiving. We have been listening to music, dancing and playing musical instruments. We have been working very hard on being able to recognize colors and our names. We continue to work on our fine motor skills, practicing with scissors and writing in our journals. Our art this week included handprint turkeys, Indian corn, paper plate turkey shakers and water color art. For Humanities, we continued to count 1-10, and practice colors in Spanish!
Tiger Room:
This week the Tigers are working on our sense of sight; looking at the bright colors of fall and taking a nature walk to see the many things around us. This has been a week of learning about our history. We read about the Pilgrims and their trip on the Mayflower to find a new country. Art we made many different projects- texture painting, hand turkeys, and made an instrument to sing along! Project Green: we talked about the desert, what lives in the desert and how hot it can get. As always we had fun making holiday cookies for our cooking project. We would like to welcome Zoey to the Tiger class. Welcome back Lleyton, hope you had a great trip!
Chameleons/Zebras
We spent the week preparing for the upcoming holiday-Thanksgiving! For circle time we read This is the Turkey, a book about yummy Thanksgiving food. We used this book to identify rhyming words (we “gobbled” when we heard a rhyme!), talk about our favorite Thanksgiving food, and what it means to be thankful. For Math, we made feather patterns, worked on identifying numbers 1-20, and counted, sorted, and weighed feathers. For Science we talked about animals in the grassland for Project Green and scooped oatmeal in the sensory tub. Our Language Arts activities included Kindergarten assessments, writing about what we’re thankful for, and Ready Readers. For Art, we made pinecone turkeys, a Thanksgiving class book, feather paintings, and turkey drawings!
